Quick Start Guide
What is Worlde Arcane?
World Arcane is a play by post type, freeform fantasy roleplay game played on a web forum. There is no game master and no dice, players are responsible for their own adventures. Think of it as collaborative story writing or improv acting with your friends. Each person assumes a character role, posts their part of the story in character, then waits until the next person posts as their character. This back and forth exchange between characters creates a continuing "storyline". Players create their world as they go which puts a great responsibility on each player to 'honor' the play of others.
By honor we mean respecting other players by staying within the events of the storyline, and not creating situations or characters so farfetched it ruins play for everyone. In other words, the player takes complete control of his/her own actions and accepts the responsibility of keeping them within the realm of believable outcomes.
If you are not experienced with freeform roleplay, please spend some time following how other players play in their story threads. And read the information around the site! Failure to follow and understand these simple concepts could result in your being banned.
Worlde Arcane's Rules
While freeform role play has few rules, your responsibility to other players and your shared storyline DO! Please read the complete Rules of Play for this Worlde. FAILURE TO FOLLOW THEM WILL GET YOU BANNED!
Creating Your Character
Think carefully about what type of character you will play and how he/she/it will fit into Worlde Arcane. Study other characters in the Worlde and how they are played. Here are some quick tips:
Include real weaknesses - These should be things that make your character interesting and fun to play, not just get in the way. They need, however, to be real weaknesses. For instance, being tired after casting magick is a normal result, not a weakness. Unless you have to take a half hour nap after any spell use, we don't want to hear it. An example is a mage with an alergy to magick, sneezing and tearing up in its presence and causing random odd effects to the spells half the time.
Make a character that will interest you - We hope you will play the game for a long time to come. This is both more likely and more fun if you give the character some thought and make it interesting for everyone.
Take half an hour and write an example you'd want to show off. We have a fine bunch of motivated writer/players and we're always looking for more. Please take the time to show off your writing a little before you submit your sample. This makes acceptance much more likely and the job of reading all the applications alot more enjoyable for us.
If your character is deemed worthy, you will be notified of acceptance within 2-3 days, it is not an automated process, OverLord judges every application. If your character is not deemed worthy, well don't take it personally it is only a game after all. You can re-submit again after taking time to study the Worlde a little more and re-read the instructions more closely.
Some Playing Tips
General Movement: Play takes place like pieces moving on a game map from location to location as the adventure moves along. Players may start out in a tavern like Seven Oaks Inn, then move to Lorimar Road as they travel, before finally arriving at their destination in Daelows.
Generally accepted gaming etiquette when traveling from one area to another is to post something like, (O.O.C. To Seven Oaks - Seven Oaks Inn) at the bottom of your last post in the area you are leaving, then post your arrival in the first post in the area you are entering. This is so other players and readers following your storyline (yes, people love to read adventures) can track the thread from where you were to where you went.
Travel: The basic rule is to be as realistic as possible. If moving from one place to another, you should post, however briefly, in the places in between. If there are characters there, you are expected to interact with them - even if just to say 'Hello'.You might get away with skipping a few places once or twice, but Overlord/Nobles(moderators) are very alert to this and you will be warned if you repeatedly break this rule. In the last resort, persistent rule-breakers can and will be banned from the game.
Teleporting is occasionally possible under special circumstances but falls under Rule #4 regarding Magick Use, but don't even think about it if you are just starting out.
Posting Frequency: Not more than twice a day, and not less than 5 hours apart. If you do not post for 5 days without letting anyone know, you may dropped from the game. It is permissible to post twice in a row if you are leading a group and you leave one 'room' and move to the next. This is so that the others in the group know where you have gone.
Use of OOC: This should be kept to an absolute minimum. It is usual to make an OOC (Out Of Character) comment if you are leading a group, and are moving to another location. The other good use is when you will be unable to post for more than a day. It is a great help to those in the same storyline to have this information.
The Tavern: Most adventurers start in a tavern because they tend to be the busiest places and therefore are the best places to meet a group of companions. Do not just appear. Make an entrance. i.e. Come through the door and go to the bar. If no-one takes any notice of you immediately, try to engage one of the other patrons in conversation.
Random Meet (adventure you'd like to join): By reading existing storylines, you may wish to encounter a particular party on the road. Simply post your character being in the same place as the group, and approach them. For instance "Aelbrog the elf walked up to the group on the Lorimar Road, and said 'Good morrow, friends! Where are you travelling to? May I join you?'". In practice, you'd probably write a bit more than that. It is just an example.
Greetings: Sometimes advertisments for travellers wishing to join a group are placed in either the Greetings section of the opening screen, or in public notices found in various places. Follow the instructions in these advertisments to join a group.
Please be aware that there are a number of regulars here who may already have 'storylines' in play, do not be surprised if you suddenly drop into an adventure and are met with a certain amount of suspicion, caution, wariness and/or are just outright attacked...or attempts are made to seduce, hustle, rob and/or befriend you. You are playing an adventure game with real people, after all, and as a result, anything is possible.
EXCESSIVE VIOLENCE OR SEXUAL SITUATIONS ARE NOT ALLOWED. Sex and violence; explicit porn & gore are not tolerated. YEW WILL BE BANNED!
